Squid Fishing Guide: Key Tips and Essentials
1. Invest in Quality Jigs
Our Inku Jigs are crafted using premium components but are priced perfectly to suit your budget, offering savings of up to 50% compared to other high-end brands.
As a small business based in Melbourne, Australia, we prioritise our customers by providing high-quality products at affordable prices. Plus, all Inku Jigs glow in the dark for added effectiveness during night fishing.
2. Understand Squid Habitat
Squid grounds typically consist of broken ground with sand holes and weed beds in depths of 1–6 meters, though they can also be found in much deeper waters.
Knowing how to identify these environments will significantly improve your chances of success.
3. Choose the Right Jig Size and Weight
Squid jig sizes from 2.5 to 3.5 are the most common and versatile, which is why we focus on crafting these sizes.
Match jig size and weight to water depth:
Shallow waters (1–3m): 2.5 size, slow sinking jigs.
Medium depths (3–16m, minimal current): 3.0 or 3.5 size.
These sizes cast well and offer the perfect balance for squid to view them as a substantial meal.
4. Select the Right Colours for Conditions
Overcast or low light: Use natural and darker colours such as Inku Hunter, Red Devil, Rainbow Magic, Dark Knight, or Gold Runner.
Sunny and bright: Opt for brighter and more transparent colours like Dynawhite, Glow Tiger, Glow Pink, Glow Orange, and Red Head.
Darker and natural colours can still work effectively in bright conditions.
All Inku Jigs glow in the dark, making them ideal for night fishing. Use the Inku UV torch to charge the glow for maximum visibility.
5. Switch Things Up
Maximise your coverage by deploying our weighted Inku Float behind your boat or kayak, or casting it out from shore, while actively working your main squid jig. This approach covers more ground and attracts followers that might be hesitant.
If the squid aren’t in a feeding frenzy, switch up the colours and sizes of your Inku Jigs. They may be chasing prey of a specific size, and adjusting your presentation can make all the difference.
6. Optimal Fishing Conditions
Focus on fishing during sunrise and sunset and around 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after tide changes.
Clear water generally offers better visibility and results, but when fishing in murky water, use our bright jigs like the Glow Tiger to stand out in the water column.
7. Gear Recommendations
Our Inku Egi Rods are 7'2" two-piece, offering versatility for squidding from shore, kayak, or boat.
For anglers focused on land-based fishing, a longer rod, such as 8'–9', can help cast your jigs further.
Pair your rod with a 2500–3000 size spinning reel spooled with 10–20lb braided line, like our Inku Premium Braid, for smooth and reliable performance.
Use a 10–20lb leader and attach your jig with our Inku Clips, allowing you to change jigs quickly and efficiently without needing to cut and retie your line.
By choosing our Inku gear and following these tips, you’ll enjoy premium quality, budget-friendly pricing, and maximise your squid fishing success in any conditions!
